About Manikarnika The Queen of Jhansi

Manikarnika was a warrior queen also known as Rani Laxmi Bai or Jhansi ki Rani. She was born to a Marathi Brahmin Family. Although, in the later years got married to Gangadhar Rao Newalkar. Gangadhar Rao was the Maharaja of Jhansi and that is how she got the title. Manikarnika or Manu was homeschooled and was very independent in her early life. She was proficient in arts like shooting, Horse Riding, and Fencing. Rani Laxmi Bai was among the first rulers in India who lead a rebellion against the British Raj. The Queen had no biological son, therefore, the pair adopted a kid and named him Damodar Rao same as their previous child who died at the age of four. Although, the rebellion stood when she lost her empire in the “Treaty of Friendship”. As per the “Treaty of Friendship” by Britishers if the king didn’t have an heir to the empire then the state would automatically belong to the British Raj. They adopted a son and it was a common practice then if the rulers didn’t have a child of their own. The British Raj didn’t accepted it and that is where the whole fiasco began. On 18th June 1858 Rani of Jhansi died in the battlefields of Gwalior against the British Raj. Laxmibai was severerly wounded in the battlefields and died of it. She was as per her wish cremated by a hermit and the important figurine of history is still remembered till today.

Manikarnika The Queen Of Jhansi: Movie Review

The movie Manikarnika has got very dubious reception from the audience. In fact some of the critics have given it a decent rating while others have bashed the movie badly. Although, I went inside the theatre with almost no expectations. To begin with, if you are someone who doesn’t like conventional Bollywood cinema, this movie can be your hardest 2 hrs and 22 minutes. The movie is based on the story of Rani Laxmi Bai, her early life, her struggle, and how she finally became a martyr. As per me, it was a Golden opportunity missed with a budget of 125 crores.

 

Script Analysis: Well, the story has been changed for dramatization purposes. The script still feels half baked. The script doesn’t explore any other character except for the lead. The story takes you from the birth till the death of the character although the overall writing seems very lazy. Most of the things that are happening in the movie are either for force shoving patriotism or just to make the scenes more conventional. The script could have been a lot better but I feel the writers thought of catering the subject with keeping logic at the back. Although, there are moments where you feel that it has started being engaging but then it again takes the low road.

 

Star Performance: You get multiple star cast in the movie with many recognizable faces but for me personally no one made an impression. The only reason I expected the movie could be good was because of Kangana Ranaut. She has done a fair amount of great movies but in this, she doesn’t shine. She being the pivotal character had no screen presence. The character required a lot of physicalities while this time Kangana even fails to impress you by her acting prowess. There are places where you will feel that she has done good but nothing to worthy to be mentioned specifically. The only scene I liked in the movie was she was killing multiple soldiers, that’s it. Also, I don’t know why Englishmen are made like this in our country. They feel funny with their usual Hindi accent and it gets terrible with time as they are given ample screen time. The only person I feel had some presence was the guy who played General Hugh Ross. He is the only one who shines despite being given that Funny Hindi Accent.

 

Direction and Screenplay: The movie has been directed by Radha Krishna Jagarlamudi and Kangana Ranaut. I don’t have words but utter disappointed after I was done with the movie. It had no substance and you just don’t follow the timeline as it jumps from event to event although being quite streamlined. The director only tries to glorify the central character and that’s it. There aren’t any smart bits that might engage you as a viewer.

 

Final Verdict: It is hardly a one time watch, therefore, I won’t recommend you wasting your money over this one. I would have gone for a half star but the technicians have done a really great job. For me, It is a failed opportunity as the source material was good and the budget was massive.
