Gully Boy Movie Review

Mumbai !!! The city of dreams, it takes a lot and gives you a lot. Have you ever tasted a French dish or something very exquisite, I am talking about a dish that needs an exact amount of ingredients to work, To me, Gully Boy was that. The movie had everything be it the dreamy settings, the captivating cinematography, a mindful direction, and a screenplay that takes the movie further. Although, you also need a pinch of spices to make it work and well that was the acting bit that keeps you engaged with such well written simple yet complex characters. It is an ode to the underground hip-hop culture that starts from the streets of Dharavi slum. It gives inspiration to a poor man that everything is achievable and meaning of life is not money but to suffice and succeed in something you love. It is a masterpiece by Zoya Akhtar in all sense who started her journey with “Luck By Chance”, a great movie in itself.

Screenplay: The movie could have given you a hard time as it is 2 and a half hours long. Although, in the end, people stay to peek a boo and not understanding that it is not a Marvel’s movie, therefore, no post-credit scenes. The narration has been kept so fresh and blazing that the movie starts and ends but you still want more. It is a movie that takes you through a curve of emotion, a great storyline and reaches to the climax for its final victory. I don’t feel the screenplay would have been any better than this.

Cinematography: I personally believe that you can not tell a great story if the aesthetics are not in line. For that cinematography plays a huge role. From the early drive in the movie to the rap cypher, everything has been covered right to hit you and pump you. You literally transcend to the world of Gully Boy. The settings of Dharavi, the complex emotions, the minute details, everything you feel is in place and doesn’t bog you down. Jay Oza has definitely done a great job in this one.

Star Performance: Well, the trailers don’t lie, you are getting exactly what you were promised. Gully Boy culminates some of the best performances of this year. Starting from Alia Bhatt, the star shines so brightly that the glaze is still inside your head even after the movie ends. She is a performer and who would have thought that the SOTY girl would be displaying such great performances one after another. Ranveer Singh is the one who takes the cake once again. He has worked hard and looks like a real rapper who has a lot to say. You can see his character understanding his way and seeking his flow. It can be cataloged to his bag as a great performance and one for which he will be remembered. Apart from these everyone who has been cast is equally good in their own dimension. Although, last but not least we have to talk about MC Sher. Siddhant Chaturvedi is destined to be a star after this. I think what Mirzapur did to Pankaj Tripathi the same Gully Boy would do to Siddhant. He is exceptional in his performance and captures his role great from start to end.

Direction: Zoya Akhtar has been behind many great works from the very first movie to this one. She along with Reema Kagti has done a stellar job as a director-writer duo. Their vision takes the movie to a whole nother level. It was their imagination which has been portrayed well on the big screen. I personally believe that Gully Boy could not have had a better director than Zoya Akhtar.

Final Verdict: You could be a fan of independent hip-hop in India or someone who has remotely heard about it. This one is not to be missed by anyone who is a fan of cinema. The movie gets you, grips you, and keeps you engaged all throughout it's screen time. For me, it is a go-go movie so book your tickets now.
