Flipkart sells 15.5 million units

Flipkart moved to settle the debate around the leadership of India’s online retail industry by announcing it had sold more and higher valued products than rivals, as the country’s top online marketplaces served up an array of discounted goods in festival sales that ended on Thursday.

Flipkart said it sold 15.5 million units during its five-day sale, striding past closest rival Amazon which said it clocked sales of 15 million units on Wednesday. Smartphones and televisions helped boost the value of goods sold by Flipkart to $500 million according to company executives, on the condition of anonymity, who were at pains to point out the contrast with Amazon which also sold large amounts of daily consumables, including detergents, spices and groceries.
