Urban Ladder expects $200 million in revenue by mid next year

UrbanLadder, an online retailer dealing in the furniture is now expecting a $150-$200 million in revenues by mid of next year. Not only this, this amazing figure of a third of a billion dollars is also a break-even point for the company.

Times of India reports

Online furniture retailer Urban Ladder expects to break even on an operational basis when its revenue reaches $200 million, which may happen by the middle of next year.

According to Ashish Goel, CEO of Urban Ladder :

“Once we get to a $150-200-million net revenue range by middle of next year, we will focus on getting our contribution margin to the 25% zone, for the first 18 months of our business, our contribution margins were over our marketing, since we have been pressing on growth (recently). So our marketing spend has increased, but we have that differential under control, We expected growth of six times. However, sometime midyear we decided to slow down for two months and focus deeper on the customer experience. We pulled back on marketing, pushed back on category launch, focused on certain top categories, operational efficiencies and redefine architecture,”

It would be a milestone for the online shopping industry of India as the break-even is something which the industry is starving for. Shopclues, a popular Indian online marketplace is also in the line of the break even as according to the company it will get to the break-even point by next winters.

Urban Ladder was launched in 2012 to compete in home decor market in India. According to the news, the company has managed to raise around  $50 million from investors led by Sequoia Capital, TR Capital, Steadview Capital, SAIF Partners and Kalaari Capital. A $100 million value of funding was raised by its straight competitor in July this year and it was led by Goldman Sachs, Zodius Technology Fund, and existing investors Bertelsmann India Investments and Norwest Venture Partners. Raising funds is important but they are not a guarantee of success. Turning profitable was the goal of Urban ladder which it claims to achieve soon.

Avoid driving without covering your mouth:

Chapped Lips

If you drive a motorbike then you have to make sure that your lips are covered every-time while driving. Cold winds are the primary reason of chapped lips. You can apply some lip balm before stepping on your cc horse.

Apply coconut oil:

Chapped Lips

Apply coconut oil before laying down in bed, this would ensure a moisturised and nourished lips when you wake up. Coconut oil not 0nly protect your lips but also repair damages caused by chapping.

Drink a LOT of water:

Chapped Lips

One of the major reason of having chapped lips is due to the fact tat we do not drink enough water in winters. It is very ‘important’ to remain hydrated for the well-being of our body however it is crucial for lips health. Drink atleast 8-10 glass of water.

Eat healthy:

Chapped Lips

By healthy, I mean not only vegetables but fruits as well. Too much spicy food works as an irritant to the damaged lips skin and hence should be avoided.

Use Lip Balm:

Chapped Lips

Everytime you step out, use a lip balm to calm down the drying of the lips. Weather is the key driving force behind most of the temporary skin issues.

DO NOT lick your lips:

Chapped Lips

Never lick your lips. It may feel like moisturising but in reality your saliva further dry your lips. “lip-licker’s dermatitis” is frequently seen in people who lick their lips too much, and can cause an itchy rash around the mouth.

It is highly recommended by physicians to use petroleum jelly to protect lips from harsh weather.

This kind of offers are generally offered by any organization in three cases:

First, when a company need to attract more customers or users which, in this case, is not applicable because we know that it is Google. Second, when a company wants to sell out its old and not so popular inventory, which is not the case here as nearly all the apps for which the discount is offered are already very hot products in terms of popularity and downloads. Only case left is the cashing the popularity in the season of sale. Christmas is no less than Diwali for the world. The best time of sale is this one and Google is en-cashing it.

Zomato will not do advertisement on Po*n sites

In a latest blog post by Zomato, the CEO has complied with the fact that using p*rn sites to attract users will not be continued in light of criticism this online food aggregator is getting. Earlier, Zomato started a new concept of advertising on the platforms which contained obscene videos. The campaign was started keeping in mind the high traffic and low advertising rates on the sites.

The idea was to get users who, after spending some time alone, gets hungry and feels the need of food which can be ordered from Zomato. According to their blog post :

“We were talking about how to tap into the already buzzing late-night delivery space, and started looking at innovative marketing opportunity areas. Highly optimised Adwords, Facebook, and Twitter ad campaigns are commoditised and therefore quite expensive. The alternative seemed almost obvious when someone said ‘Hey we should try advertising on porn sites’, and then justified it with ‘look, people watch porn, and people get hungry, so stop judging me.’

It was an idea worth looking into at the very least, so we did. As it turns out:

  • India ranks #5 in terms of most daily visitors to Pornhub (the world’s biggest porn site network)
  • Outside of Google, Facebook, Yahoo, and e-commerce sites, Xvideos is one of India’s top visited sites
  • The average time spent on the site by Indians is ~8 minutes (yes, really, just 8 minutes #quickgunmurugan)

So we advertised on p*rn sites.”

Here are some of the images used by Zomato:

This is not the first time Zomato is in news, earlier it blew away Amazon in humour during ‘aur dikhao’ campaign by Amazon.

Zomato Amazon

Anyway, the justification made by the company is that the ROI is the most critical factor in any business, if a business do not work on the principle of investing less and earning more it will end up burning all of its money. The deals and coupons and fine till a time to attract visitors but what next? So, in order to get more guys ‘craving’ for food with hunger during night is to run campaigns via advertising on porn sites.

Oyo Rooms is about to acquire Zo Rooms

oyo zo

Looks like Ritesh Agarwal, Oyo chief executive Officer is planning to capture the market as much as he can, even if it means buying its strongest rival Zo Room. According to news by ET, Oyo rooms is planning to buy its main rival Zo room in an all-stock deal. The news is not a big shock in context of the information about Zo Room’s inability to raise further funding to sustain its operation in India. The news is a big blow to the startups competing in the same sphere as that of these two companies.

According to the reports, 40% of the employees will be absorbed in Oyo Rooms. Zostel was founded 2 years ago with a capital of Rs20 lakh with a motto of providing air-conditioned dormitories with laundry service, TV, internet and other facilities for under Rs 500 a night to travellers smart on budget.

The Reason of acquisition:

The reason of acquisition is the fact that Zo Rooms has failed to raise any further funding from its investors. In fact the blow of this inability is so heavy that Oyo Rooms set itself up to grab Zo Room inadvertently grabbing a big market share and a large chunk of potential revenue. Zo Room hasve around a network of 11,000 rooms in 1,000 hotels across more than 50 cities and towns in India

What to learn?

Expand, but never over Expand. Take Risk but calculated one. These are the two most important lessons which the acquisition of Zo rooms teaches us. Have they had been able to forecast the growth potential, they could have gained the expected potential growth in some time more than expected one.
