These 10 things ruled online shopping in 2015

2015 was a year filled of a lot of turmoil for market. The market is growing and with it quality of service, number of sellers, number of sites, number of deals, offers and discount coupons are growing. But there were few things which ruled the whole industry in 2015. Lets have a look at the most dominating factors of 2015 in the sphere of online shopping.

1. Paytm Vs Mobikwik war

This was rather pre-destined, what would happen if two very well financially and technically backed wallet based startups collides? A war of cashback and nearly-all-occassion offers were bombarded on the customers. While these companies bled funding, customers enjoyed.

2. The App-only love

This was rather awkward as it is a necessity by default for nearly all big etailers to stay on all platforms (app, mobile site and desktop) to serve all customers genre. Shopping sites started getting a lot of traffic from smartphones which they concluded as the ‘only’ source of potential projected revenue in India. Many companies went App-only and suffered heavy loses in their sales, many were about to repeat the history but packed their bags to retaliate from an abyss of misconception that going App-only is the best way to work in the industry. A remark was made from Mr. Bahl, CEO, Snapdeal.com which says : “One thing that really helped our fashion business was Myntra’s app-only strategy… I think it’s the most consumer-unfriendly idea I have ever heard of. Maybe three years later it’s worth a conversation, when PC contribution is even lesser. Even then, it is a conversation still. It’s not a yes or no situation.” – TOI. Well, high paid analysts were not so smart after-all.

3. Less Coupons More offers

2014 observed a Tsunami of coupons and deals. Companies were full of money via funding and were busy in educating people with the experience of the online shopping though burning their cash. The cash was burnt in terms of coupons which were Really Good. By the end of the year, companies like Flipkart, Snapdeal & Amazon started pushing offers instead of coupons. As per Mr. Shashi, one of the online shopping analysts of FreeKaaMaal stated that his recent observation is that their are less coupons and more offers present with the big etailers. As the matter of fact, the offers and deals nowadays are somewhat better than many products with applicable coupon codes.

4. Shipping

China generally goes with a Free one day shipping to all its customers. The practice of one day shipping is so common that it has become a by default modus operandi for the big companies there. India, however is still strugling in this part but some ground breaking changes were made by major ecommerce giants this year. For example : ‘Flipkart First’, under which a member just have to pay around Rs. 500 one time in a year and will get Free one day delivery in return, became very popular among the loyal customers of Flipkart. Etailing extended its arms way beyond expectations in terms of logistics reach. Amazon stopped its Free Shipping service for orders below Rs.499 only. Jabong added VAT and additional shipping charges. Snapdeal partnered with GoJavas and Snapdeal invests an additional $20 million in it to strengthen its delivery wing.

5. Exclusive launch

From Xiaomi’s Flash Sale to Lenovo K3 & A7000, online shopping sites were the most sought after destination for the smartphone lovers. The exclusive launches were something which shook the whole retailing & marketing concepts of smartphones in India. From the convential method of using print media and TV ads for the sales of mobiles, the sale was made through tie-ups with various dominant sites like that of Amazon, Snapdeal and specially Flipkart. Millions of smartphones started selling in a few seconds, the ‘out-of-stock’ label frustrated as well as intrigued shoppers to buy the product in demand (human nature – to incline toward rare).

6. Hiring Top Executives

Hiring of Mr. Puneet Soni by Flipkart for the top management as its chief product manager was one of the many hirings ecommerce retail giants did in order to fill the vaccum of leadership in the top positions. The hirings were from various big MNC’s like that of Google, HUL etc. and were meant to brew the startups with experience and values. The salary offered to them were more than a crore rupees of package annually implying the deficiency of talent in the newly born industry in India.

7. Refund policies

Refund is an after sale service provided by the etailers for their shoppers in order to give them the best shopping experience ever. This process, however, was not good till late 2014 but it sprang up at a great hieghts when Flipkart introduced easy returns and refund policies. The refund policies target the highest customer gratification. Flipkart is now offering a full refund in a few hours of return. Amazon and Snapdeal are on the same track wherein Amazon is leading among two.

8. Freebies by AskMeBazaar

We have to include it in the list. AskMeBazaar is big for sure, but it do have a bad reputation for its delivery and customer care services. While members of our Forum were complaining about worst than imagination service of AMB, some of the members started getting freebies from it. They were amazed by the timely delivery of the freebies. AMB is now improving at an awesome level but it never stop to surprise us.

9. Attack on delivery boys

The backbone of industry, delivery boy, were attacked on multiple occasions. They were looted, mugged and were robbed of the cash they collected for the COD orders. Some were brutally beaten and held captive. It is really sad to see this kind of behaviour toward hard working guys, running all day to spread happiness.

10. Increase in fraud activities

Companies, specially Flipkart, were targeted and looted. It was the extreme exploitation of their customer friendly schemes. Thanks to activeness of police, most of them got caught in no time.

Do you know why fans In India Have 3 Blades While Fans In USA Have 4..?

Ever wondered why Fans in India have 3 blades while Fans in USA have 4 blades attached to its axis? Well there is a logical reason behind this count.

The fact that the country is not so hot on average temperature range. Most of the houses use air conditners to maintain room temperature. The airconditioner may be at a corner of the house which needs a proper circulation and equal dispersion of the air. This equal dispersion can be achieved by something mild yet powerful. A fan in US is designed to move a large mass of air throughout the area and hence a slow yet powerful 4 bladed fan is used.

Three blade concept of India:

In India, a three blade fan is used. Generally, a higher average temperature is observed throghtout the country. Not all house have an air conditioning system. Hence, a lighter, faster and air efficient fan is used in India. These traits can be observed by a three blade fans which have had been very successful in India. However, some houses have 4 bladed fans as a ‘Home Decor’ item.

Interesting, right?

Men robbed an ecommerce delivery boy of a camera worth Rs 47,445 and Rs 10,000 cash

Etailing is a booming sector in India. With each step forward, complementary industries like that of logistics also brew themselves. While everything goes online on ecommerce portals, offline layer is performed by supply chain personnel where they step out on their vehicle to deliver the goods placed digitally. The guys drive themselves to the place where the parcel has to be delivered and get the cash in return if it is a COD (cash on Delivery) order OR ensure that the prepaid order reach the right person.

What was the case?

A delivery boy was robbed of a camera worth Rs 47,445 and Rs 10,000 cash, which he carried with himself, by gang of four men in Kandivli (E). After an FIR was lodged, police has arrested accused according to news.

What exactly happened?

Like any other normal day Mr. Ashok Bangali, a delivery boy for an etailer got an assignment of delivering a package in Lokhandwala complex to deliver a camera. According to officials : “One of the accused, Shaileshchandra Nagwanshi (22), created a log-in under the fic titious name of Pritam Shah on Flipkart. He then placed an order for a camera worth Rs 47,445 and sought a delivery at Balaji Enclave at Lokhandwala Complex in Kandivli (E)”. The address on the order was of a building with Balaji Enclave name. Unable to find the place, Mr. Ashok called upon ‘Shah – the person who placed the order’ to seek directions. The accused answered the phone and asked him to come to a bus-stop near an adjacent society.

The prime accused, Bunty Dubey (29), was waiting at the bus-stop. Bunty called upon his two associates after confirming that Mr. Ashok had brought the ordered camera with him. In no time, the accused then brandished a revolver toward Mr. Ashok and snatched the camera along with Rs.10,000 which he had collected as COD from various orders.

How were the criminals caught?

According to senior inspector Dilip Yadav of Samta Nagar police station

“We formed two special teams of personnel and tracked down the IP address of the computer that was used to create the Flipkart log-in. The probe led the teams to Nagwanshi. We found that the contact which the gang had used to create the log-in was that of a stolen cellphone. The accused had snatched the handset from a security guard of an ATM. Nagwanshi led us to Dubey, who was arrested on Thursday,”.

Right now industry is hammered with these kinds of frauds and criminal offences these kind of cases are rising every day despite police being active in barricading the crimes and frauds. With a salary of Rs 10,000 – Rs 12,000 and hectic schedule with health problems, the delivery boys are suffering the most.

Urban Ladder expects $200 million in revenue by mid next year

UrbanLadder, an online retailer dealing in the furniture is now expecting a $150-$200 million in revenues by mid of next year. Not only this, this amazing figure of a third of a billion dollars is also a break-even point for the company.

Times of India reports

Online furniture retailer Urban Ladder expects to break even on an operational basis when its revenue reaches $200 million, which may happen by the middle of next year.

According to Ashish Goel, CEO of Urban Ladder :

“Once we get to a $150-200-million net revenue range by middle of next year, we will focus on getting our contribution margin to the 25% zone, for the first 18 months of our business, our contribution margins were over our marketing, since we have been pressing on growth (recently). So our marketing spend has increased, but we have that differential under control, We expected growth of six times. However, sometime midyear we decided to slow down for two months and focus deeper on the customer experience. We pulled back on marketing, pushed back on category launch, focused on certain top categories, operational efficiencies and redefine architecture,”

It would be a milestone for the online shopping industry of India as the break-even is something which the industry is starving for. Shopclues, a popular Indian online marketplace is also in the line of the break even as according to the company it will get to the break-even point by next winters.

Urban Ladder was launched in 2012 to compete in home decor market in India. According to the news, the company has managed to raise around  $50 million from investors led by Sequoia Capital, TR Capital, Steadview Capital, SAIF Partners and Kalaari Capital. A $100 million value of funding was raised by its straight competitor in July this year and it was led by Goldman Sachs, Zodius Technology Fund, and existing investors Bertelsmann India Investments and Norwest Venture Partners. Raising funds is important but they are not a guarantee of success. Turning profitable was the goal of Urban ladder which it claims to achieve soon.

This kind of offers are generally offered by any organization in three cases:

First, when a company need to attract more customers or users which, in this case, is not applicable because we know that it is Google. Second, when a company wants to sell out its old and not so popular inventory, which is not the case here as nearly all the apps for which the discount is offered are already very hot products in terms of popularity and downloads. Only case left is the cashing the popularity in the season of sale. Christmas is no less than Diwali for the world. The best time of sale is this one and Google is en-cashing it.
