Why do we Kiss under the Mistletoe?

Vaishnavi

The popular belief regarding Mistletoe is that if a couple kiss under it during Christmas time, their love becomes everlasting.

No one knows how this belief started, but a few stories related to its origin exist.

According to a Norse legend, Frigga the goddess of love, had a son Baldur, who was god of innocence and light. To protect her son from death, she cast a spell on everything.

But Misltoe somehow got excluded. Loki, the god of mischief, took advantage of it and made an arrow out of Mistletoe. He then tricked blind Frigga into shooting his own son with the arrow.

Frigga tears of grief fell onto Mistletoe, forming the white berries. Since then, everyone has had to make peace with love under the Mistletoe. This is the most popular story behind Mistletoe kissing.

Some other folklore says that a woman caught under a Mistletoe can not refuse a kiss. It would bring bad luck otherwise.

Mistletoe is a plant which can grow even in adverse weather conditions. It is said to bring good luck and happiness when hanged at the front door.

While the true story still remains suspenseful, one thing we are sure about is that Mistletoe is a poisonous plant and can not be eaten in any way.
