Flavoursome ‘Sambar Rice’ or Sambar Sadam Recipe

Step 1

In a bowl, add tamarind and hot water. Leave it for 20-30 minutes.

Step 2

Then squeeze out the tamarind pulp and keep it aside.

Step 3

Rinse rice and Arhar dal (Tur dal) 3-4 times and then put them in a pressure cooker.

Step 4

Add some salt, sesame oil and water. Cook them for 15 minutes on medium heat.

Step 5

Now, heat some sesame oil in a pan. Add some onions and saute well.

Step 6

Add curry leaves, hing and diced tomatoes. Saute again for a few minutes.

Step 7

Then add vegetables like French beans, drumsticks, carrot, capsicum, brinjal and pumpkin.

Step 8

Saute for a minute. Add turmeric, salt, red chilli powder and water. Mix well.

Step 9

Cover the pan with a lid and cook for around 20 minutes. Keep checking in between.

Step 10

Now add the tamarind pulp and sambar masala. Cook for another 10 minutes till the taste of raw tamarind goes away.

Step 11

Add cooked rice and lentils to the sambar. Pour ghee on top of it.

Step 12

In a pan, add ghee, dry red chillies, hing, curry leaves and saute for a minute.

Step 13

Garnish with the tempering and enjoy the authentic South Indian Sambar rice, which will leave your taste buds in awe.
